What Is a Dental Bridge?

A CGI of a dental bridge

Think of a dental bridge as a bunch of teeth stuck together, kind of like they appear when they’re in your smile. However, unlike your real teeth, they really are all one piece, but that tiny prosthetic alone can restore up to four empty spaces in your smile!

If you’ve lost anywhere between one and four teeth that are surrounded on either side by at least one healthy tooth, you may qualify for a dental bridge. At Washington DC Dentistry, we customize our own dental bridges right here in the office using the SprintRay Midas 3D printer and durable, lifelike materials to create restorations that not only look just like real teeth, but they also function like them too!

Types of Dental Bridges

There are several different types of dental bridges available, however the one that’s most beneficial to your individual smile will be determined at your consultation with Dr. Kham. Here’s a closer look at the options.

Traditional Dental Bridges

Traditional dental bridges work by closing the empty spaces in your smile with a prosthetic that can support between one and four consecutive teeth. These restorations secure in place via two “abutment” crowns which must be cemented in place over two existing, healthy teeth already in your arches. To do this, Dr. Kham will need to remove some enamel from the existing teeth and then cement the bridge in place where it will both look and feel like real teeth for up to a decade.

Implant Bridges

Unlike traditional dental bridges, implant bridges attach to the jawbone via one or more surgically placed dental implants. This means you don’t need to alter healthy teeth to receive treatment, and your restoration can last a lifetime with proper care. Furthermore, because dental implants provide important jawbone stimulation, they can help protect the jaw and reduce your risk of future tooth loss.
