What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a titanium post that is placed into the jawbone to replace a tooth root that has been lost. It can fuse with the bone to act just like the root of a tooth and form a strong foundation. After the implant is placed, a crown will be fabricated to fit onto the implant that will look, feel, and function like a normal tooth. Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth, or they can be used in conjunction with a denture to replace an entire row of teeth.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – The first step is always a consultation with Dr. Kham at our office. Patients must have adequate jawbone density and have no lingering dental health problems to be a good candidate for dental implants.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Since Dr. Kham can place dental implants right here in our office, you won’t have to worry about coordinating with other teams. As for the actual surgery, it takes roughly one hour to place a single implant, and anywhere from one to eight can be placed along one arch. Sometimes we collaborate closely with trusted local implant specialists, depending on your individual treatment needs.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – After the implant surgery, the posts will need several months to heal and fuse with the jaw through a process called osseointegration. After this has occurred, you can return to receive your abutments, or connector pieces.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – Your custom-made dental restoration will be designed for your specific smile, and whether it’s a crown, bridge, or dentures, it’ll attach to your abutments and you’ll immediately be able to enjoy full oral functionality.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • They stimulate the jaw and prevent further bone loss

  • They can help a patient retain a more youthful facial shape
